They’re Great! Frosties FC win five a side tournament
Footballer
Michael Owen was one of the stars of Stoke Gabriel’s five-a-side football
tournament.
No, he was not the
Newcastle United striker. He was a member of the Frosties FC team, who were
this year’s winner of the tournament. Frosties took the trophy for the
second year running despite having lost their best player to injury in the
first match.
Rob Allday suffered a
twisted ankle when he was slide tackled by one of the Preschool Dads. Kevin
Frost, captain of the Frosties, said at the time: “We have Michael Owen on
our team so we should be alright!” Although not ‘the’ Michael Owen, he must
have done the trick as the team went on to win every one of their games.
The six teams with names
such as Daddies Dribblers and The Three and a Half Inch Floppies, a team
from a local computer company, played enthusiastically but were looking
tired by the end of the afternoon. David Stacey, of the Preschool Dads was
the team’s best goal scorer, said: “It’s good fun and it’s great to be
involved in a village event.”
The
tournament has become an annual event in the village diary and is in its
seventh year. Stacy Hurst, the organiser said: “We always get good support
and everyone is having a lot of fun.” Money raised through team sponsors
and side stalls on the day will go to Stoke Gabriel’s toddler group and
preschool.
