Friends of Stoke Gabriel Church

FOSGC is a registered Charity raising funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the Church of St. Mary and St. Gabriel in the parish of Stoke Gabriel.

The Friends of Stoke Gabriel Church was formed in 1995 as a registered Charity  with the objective of raising funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the Church of Saint Mary and Saint Gabriel in the parish of Stoke Gabriel including the Church itself, the churchyard and burial grounds and also the Old Schoolroom in Church Walk.

There are records of a place of worship on the site of our church as far back as 1066 and through the centuries villagers have been sustained and reassured by the solid presence of the church and the joyful pealing of its bells. The Church and its surrounds form an important and significant part of the Conservation Area of the village and it is imperative that it is preserved and maintained for the benefit of villagers, visitors and future generations.

Over the past 19 years funds in excess of £120,000 have been raised by the Friends of the Church which have  been made available to The Parochial Church Council for numerous projects some small, such as repairs to stone work around the lytch gate to major projects such as the purchase  of a splendid 1919 Harrison & Harrison organ from the Royal School of Church Music. Some of the other major works we have been able to finance include roof repairs, redecoration of the church interior, new electrical wiring and repairs to the tower and clock and re-roofing of the Old Schoolroom.

At the present time (2014) major work is about to commence on replacement of the central heating boiler and heating system together with rearrangement of pews and flooring. This will reduce both the gas bill and carbon emissions considerably.

Membership of the Friends is open to anyone who cares that the church is preserved for future generations. Members do not have to church goers, they just need to be concerned that the church and surrounding must not be allowed to fall into disrepair. The annual subscription is very reasonable at a minimum of £5.00 or £8.00 for a couple and with a current membership of about 150, plus gift aid, subscriptions form a major part of our annual income.

Our main objective however is to have fun whilst making money for a most worthwhile cause. Throughout the year the Friends organise fund raising activities such as talks in the Old Schoolroom during the winter months, Wine & Wisdom quiz nights, variety shows, open gardens with teas, summer evening drinks, barbeques, concerts, Carol Concerts and vintage car shows. Newsletters keep members informed of our activities as well as details published in the Parish News and on posters displayed around the village.
