Local Facilities and Recreation

The following comments were made on issues around Local Business & Tourism. This is raw data and has not been altered from what was put down on the postits we collected after the 2 consultation days.

  • Village needs to be more fairly represented. A few individuals dictate too much – village hall (should be reminded it’s a community resource).
  • If you don’t like it here go!!
  • Agree.
  • Me too.
  • And me.
  • Need functional parish council.
  • Need village hall for all the people.
  • Agreed.
  • Short mat bowls or/and skittles in village hal.
  • I agree.
  • School playing field available for the children to play football without policing! by individuals. Need to approach Devon County Council, who ‘own’ the field, not the school. Or an alternative space, i.e. a farmer’s no-used [sic] field very close to village.
  • All local facilities are vital to village.
  • Keeping & supporting local shops & in particular the Post Office essential to maintain our village community.
  • Hear hear!
  • Better footpaths into the village is [sic] required.
  • Village hall needs to be made available to anyone and everyone in the village on an equal basis. No preferences.
  • Parish Council should be reminded that they are elected to represent the feelings and opinions of the community objectively, not just represent their own opinions.
  • Preserve the natural features of the main vistas of the village, such as the Church Orchard, the Mill Pond walks and avoid too many park benches and signs.
  • Please support our local shop and post office. These are vital to keep our village alive. Don’t get into your car to go the Sainsbury’s every time. Try the village shops first. Also, excellent garden centre again.
  • What about a play area or skateboard park at V&A?
  • Good for young people to see school field, but could a rubbish bin be provided?
  • Improved and safe paths through narrows to garden centre. – speed bumps too – dangerous when walking with buggy and toddler.
  • Use of school field would be nice
  • Only under supervision!
  • Need to update village hall. People see it as an elderly person’s place.
  • Young won’t go there.
  • Castle pub. Well done, Jan. Locals need good food and good beer!
  • A village green would be lovely.
  • We need to hotel to stay as a hotel. 10 beds is viable.
  • In endeavours to improve access, kindly conserve unspoilt areas of mature woodland adjacent.
  • Need decent kid’s park.
  • Agree.
  • Me 2.
  • We must keep our post office.
  • Retain post office at all costs – for the social/community life & soul of village.
  • From the safety point of view we need more footpaths as you put your life in danger every time to walk main routes into the village.
  • Need for a community area for all to enjoy and hold all village events. Something to be proud of.
  • More public toilets.
  • I agree.
  • Lovely flowers etc – made a beautiful village. Thanks.
  • There needs to be facilities for young people apart from pubs.
  • More recreation space e.g. football field / tennis courts / basketball.
  • Is there anyone who has experience in writing bids for funding? There must be ways of gaining funding or co-funding to finance new / upgrade facilities.
  • Would be good to open closed paths – also the round Mill Pool walk.
  • More space for football / tennis etc.
  • Boating ‘facilities’ are overwhelmed. Needs sensible development e.g. extended pontoon.
  • I agree.
  • Specially for locals.
  • We must fight if necessary to keep our village post office.
  • Area for children to play.
  • School field could be used under parental control.
  • V&A car park open space, tennis courts.
  • Agree!
  • Path for horses.
  • I agree.
  • More pontoon space for dinghies please.
  • Be great if locals, especially sailors remembered they are by residential housing and not shout so loudly especially late at night (sound carries a lot by water). Please have a little courtesy for residents who not only put up with a lot of disruption on the quay (deliveries, fire engines filling up, overloads of traffic and visitors at times etc, etc. But we also look out for you, calling police etc. when there are incidents. P.S. would the (drunk?) sailor with the huge maniacal laugh at midnight please shut up!!
  • Make scout hut car park a tennis court.
  • Agree.
  • Or a swimming pool?
  • It would be really good to have some tennis courts available for public use.
  • I agree.
  • Need a shelter for youngsters to meet – not the bus shelter.
  • Agree.
  • Yes.
  • Flat open space (preferably grass) for recreation.
  • Agree.
  • More recreation facilities for young children, i.e. football area, in village. Why is school field always locked!!
  • More land for allotments. There are not any available at present.
  • More community woodland like Hoyle Copse.
  • Parents could sign an agreement not to sue in case of accidents so school field can be used.
  • Cinema needed.
  • Agree.
  • What! There’s a huge one in Paignton!
  • Yes, but playing run of the mill films!!!
  • Playing recreation area/building additional to the village hall for badminton etc.
  • Perhaps we could have a climbing wall facility for all to use, especially the youth.
  • Not in the quarry!
  • Definitely in the quarry since better to climb on natural rock outside.
  • Leave school gates open so youth may use it!
  • Agree.
  • Leave school gate open – far safer than children climbing over and risking injury.
  • Agree.
  • Could new village hall be combined with library facilities / local clubs / cubs and scouts.
  • New larger village hall + car parking needed.
  • Bridle paths for horses.
  • Agree!
  • Yes!
  • Large community greenhouse.
  • Dredge the millpond (or open sluice gate at certain times of the year) to prevent it completely silting over. This will allow more boating & kayaking.
  • Why is the village hall not used so much – it is a large building & should be able to be used by all ages.
  • More parking please!
  • Village hall for all to use – responsibly.
  • Superb – the SGBA is one of the reasons I enjoy being here. We could do with a longer pontoon though!
  • Stop adding small silly flow [flower?] beds on roadside.
  • Lack of mobile phone signal in village is worrying – difficult to get help quickly if accidents near / on quay / water.
  • No street lights.
  • Agree.
  • Acquire Rydon Acres concrete for village.
  • Village hall should be more people friendly – i.e. encourage people to hire it not discourage.
  • Agree.
  • Clearer marking of existing footpaths. Open more footpaths if possible. Apply pressure to re-open woods walk!
  • More land for allotments.
  • Agreed.
  • Give the kids more freedom to play as they want, i.e. climbing trees.
  • The V&A car park must be developed. It is a pit & we need houses.
  • Please can we improve our play park
  • – landscape the area
  • – add a slide?
  • Yes, all my kids say it really needs more!
  • More recreation facilities for youngsters, esp. teenagers, e.g. skate board park, tennis court. More walking routes around village.
  • Agree.
  • Sign post to loos.
  • How about a swimming pool behind the village garden centre?
  • School field could be used by public outside school hours.
  • Allotments, local community growing & teaching how to grow. Building local sufficiency in leisure and in work! Building a community.
  • Yes!
  • Congratulations & thanks to those stalwart volunteers who have worked so hard to provide the lovely environment i.e. Hoyle Copse, the flower beds, the churchyard etc.
  • Please keep and conserve the walled garden in Gabriel Court Hotel.
  • Village tennis court would be great for young and old alike!
  • I agree.
  • Good idea.
  • Develop climbing on a small area of Hoyle Copse, there are many people interested in this & the young people could learn to climb here.
  • Village hall – need to be reminded it’s a community resource & that includes everyone, young & old!
  • Much more use could be made of the school field & car park. Car park could easily be extended.
  • No mobile phone masts in the village please – they disfigure the landscape!
  • Could we use the quarry in Hoyle Copse for recreation – ideal for climbing!
  • Hope not!
  • Increase size of the dinghy pontoon so that those with a mooring can have a space on the pontoon.
  • School field should be open for use.
  • Agree.
  • I think we are so lucky to have so many groups already – such an active population! We should consolidate & improve facilities for the existing groups – ask the groups what they need / want.
