Come and join us

We meet on the second Tuesday of every month, except August, in the Village Hall at 7.30pm.  We offer a warm and welcoming environment in which to meet old friends and make new ones, to learn new skills and hear about a wide range of topics, often from visiting speakers.

On arrival you will be welcomed at the door, then invited to take a seat to listen to the visiting speaker, or be introduced to a craft or skill. In recent years crafts have included mosaic making, parcel wrapping and making sock monkeys- created from a pair of old socks! We have listened to talks on a wide range of topics from Life in a submarine, to the role of Devon Freewheelers, the motorbike riders who transport blood and human organs for transplant throughout the country.

Our talk usually lasts around 45 minutes before we take a tea-break.  It is in this break that you will be able to read about all the events which are being organised locally and nationally by the WI and which you can choose to attend in the near future. These include county level quizzes, visits to places of interest, classes being arranged locally by the WI, local and national WI conferences .....the list is endless and caters for all tastes.

After the tea break we usually have the business section of the meeting. In this we discuss issues relating to our WI, maybe the venue for our annual New Year lunch, or the possibility of organising a canoe trip on the Dart – always popular. Equally we could be inviting our ladies to help on our cake stall at the Village Wassail, held annually in January, or discussing our entry for our Village Carnival procession in August.

Visitors are welcome at our meetings and are asked to pay a voluntary contribution of £2.  Members join annually, the year beginning in January, or on pro-rata basis later in the year. For their membership they are offered 11 meetings locally each year, access to events organised within the county and nationally, access to the WI college- which offers a wide range of courses, and receipt of WI Life, the national magazine of the WI and Devon Life, our local magazine.

We hold our General meeting in April at which we hear reports from the Secretary and Treasurer about the year just gone and at which the committee for the forthcoming year is elected.

The present committee (2015-2016) is made up of 10 members, the President - Christine Bradbury,  the Secretary- Pia Barrett and the Treasurer- Gill Rawson.  Other members are Carole Brown, Chris Davey, Sue Glover,  Lorraine Hewitt,  Chris Potham, Mary Ostler and Jackie Tucker.
