The Church of St. Mary and St.
Gabriel, Stoke Gabriel
You will be very welcome to visit this beautiful old parish church, either on Sunday to join us in worship or to explore during the week. The church is normally open during daylight hours. The interior of the church contains a fine set of box pews and a beautiful rood screen, parts of which date from mediaeval times. A magnificent new South door has been given in memory of Sir Fred Pontin, founder of the holiday camp chain. The interior was repainted in November 2006. Outside, the churchyard has fine views over the mill pond and the River Dart, and has numerous gravestones associated with the Churchward family, including one commemorating George Jackson Churchward, the famous railway engineer. However, its chief glory is a yew tree probably about 800 years old, and possibly older. A traditional rhyme claims to provide a way in which wishes can be fulfilled: " Walk ye backward round about me Seven times round for all to see; Stumble not and then for certain one true wish will come to thee. "
